Uninsured Motorist Coverage (Video)
It’s the law in California that you must have auto insurance, so why would you want to buy uninsured motorist coverage? Other insurance companies are quick to eliminate this coverage to save you money, or when you name your price, but it is a very important coverage that has benefited many families who we insure.
If you’re carrying adult-appropriate limits for your auto liability to others, you have anywhere between $100,000 to $500,000 in coverage if you were to injure someone else. Unfortunately, with all those advertisements offering to save you money on your auto insurance out there, a large percentage of drivers don’t have responsible limits like you.
If you are injured by another driver who has the state minimum limit of only $15,000 per person your medical bills alone could exceed their limit. If that happens, your uninsured motorist coverage will respond to your injury up to your policy limit, and this is what we call under-insured motorist coverage. By carrying an uninsured motorist limit of $500,000, you are ensuring that you will be covered for your injuries, lost wages, pain and suffering up to that limit regardless of what limit the at-fault driver carries.
Uninsured motorist also covers every member of your household even if they are not a listed driver on your policy or not of age to be a driver. It will even cover you and your family for injuries if they are hit by another car as a pedestrian. That’s right. You don’t even have to be in a car to be protected by this coverage.
Unfortunately I have seen this coverage pay out when a member of the family was hit in a crosswalk, but those families were comforted to find out that they had this coverage when it happened.
